Do you ever see earthquake damage on the news and wonder if it had to be so bad? Investigate just what makes a building earthquake resistant as you experiment with simple models on an actual shake table. What ideas do you have to improve these models? Work as an engineering team to design a building code that would minimize damage and save lives. Then, investigate a real world earthquake site to uncover just why it is so difficult to enforce a good building code. Earthquakes can’t be prevented, but your designs can help keep buildings standing and people safe. Use your imagination and problem-solving skills to Shake It Up!

About Your Extraordinary Saturday (YES)
For 1st – 4th Grade Students
A New Adventure Every Weekend
MITY's program for elementary students enables inquisitive, high achieving 1st - 4th grade students to continue learning outside of the traditional classroom. Courses are intentionally designed to inspire inquiry, activate imaginations, and engage eager learners in hands on discovery that is not possible within a regular classroom setting. While students are in class, parents are invited to listen to professional speakers on topics related to raising bright children, socialize with other parents, or visit a local coffee shop.
