Could King Kong really exist? Should an airline overbook? These and other questions can be explored through mathematical modeling, the process of applying mathematics with the goal of understanding a real-world situation. Students will explore empirical, simulation, deterministic, and stochastic approaches to modeling. Mathematics will be used to help answer the question “What’s the connection between a and b?” in a variety of settings such as life science, physical science, politics, geography, sports, psychology and finance. Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, or instructor’s approval.
