An Introduction to Mathematical Modeling

Could King Kong really exist?  Should an airline overbook?  What is the relationship between the speed of a car and its mileage?  These and other questions can be explored through mathematical modeling, the process of applying mathematics with the goal of understanding a real world situation.  Students will explore empirical, simulation, deterministic, and stochastic approaches as they collect data, learn to build models that help to interpret the data, and develop generalizations about the use of the model.  Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, or instructor’s approval.
