Introduction to Mathematical Modeling

Could King Kong really exist?  Should an airline overbook?  These and other questions can be explored through mathematical modeling, the process of applying mathematics with the goal of understanding a real-world situation.  Students will explore empirical, simulation, deterministic, and stochastic approaches to modeling.  A variety of learning approaches will be used, from fun, hands-on, practical explorations to computer-assisted study. Mathematics will help us answer the question, “What’s the connection between a and b?” in a variety of settings such as environmental science, physical science, politics, geography, sports, psychology, and finance.  Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, or instructor’s approval.
