Should an airline overbook? Could King Kong really exist? How is mathematics actually used in the world? These and other questions can be explored through mathematical modeling, the process of applying mathematics with the goal of understanding a real-world situation. We will delve into empirical, simulation, deterministic, and stochastic approaches to modeling in a playful, creative way. Students will engage in fun, hands-on, practical explorations as well as computer-assisted study. We will investigate the connection between a and b in a variety of settings, such as environmental science, physical science, politics, geography, sports, psychology, and finance.
Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, or instructor’s approval.
