You Are What You Eat: An Introduction to Biochemistry and the Digestive System

Did you know that our mouths secrete approximately one liter of saliva each day, or that your stomach produces hydrochloric acid – the same material masons use to clean bricks? In this class, students will investigate homeostasis and how their digestive system helps them maintain narrow limits. After learning the anatomy of the digestive system, students will discover the physiology of each organ as related to biochemistry. We will research vitamins and minerals and the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for each. We will discuss eating for a healthy body and mind, various digestive diseases/issues such as Crohn’s, Celiac and Gerd, and uncover how diabetes isn’t just a sugar-related disease. Labs will include mechanical vs. chemical digestion, enzyme action on various foods, dissection of a cat’s digestive system, and more!
