Toxicology: Keep Calm and Put Your Lab Coat On

Are you curious about what poisons are lurking in your food, clothing, and home?  Do you want to see the effects of toxins on plants and crickets? If so, then this is the class for you!  Toxicology is the study of the harmful effects of chemical, physical, or biological agents on living organisms.  In this class, students will research questions such as: Is organic food really better for you? Flesh-eating bacteria that can’t be killed with antibiotics sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie – is it real?  Is it safe to drink water from a stream? It seems like everything in the environment can give you cancer – is that true? Can too much caffeine kill you? Using bioassays, students will investigate the toxicity of household products, common chemicals, and samples from the environment.  We will explore contaminants commonly found in our everyday lives, their effects on humans, and how we can reduce our risk.
