The Physics of Sports

Did you know that physics can help us to understand sports, and sports can help us to understand physics?  In this class, students will actively explore topics such as kinematics, biomechanics, and fluid dynamics.  We will investigate questions such as “What makes a soccer ball bend as it flies through air?” and “How does the idea of torque relate to the pitching of a baseball?”  We will often use the key concept of “optimization” to gain insight into how the body works and how effective decisions are made in sports.  Students will participate in multiple hands-on activities and see interesting applications of technology.  Finally, students will design and perform their own scientific experiments that relate physics to sports.
