What do silly putty and fireworks have in common? They are both examples of chemical reactions! This class will introduce students to the wonderful world of chemistry. We will begin with the idea that matter is composed of atoms and molecules that are attracted to each other and in constant motion. Students will experiment with and observe the heating and cooling of a solid, liquid and gas. We will investigate various properties of substances, such as density and solubility, and use our knowledge to identify the individual elements of mixed substances. What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder? Can substances be identified by how well they dissolve in water? Let’s find out!
