Cryptology 101: The Escape (WAITLIST)

  • Time of Day

    Afternoon Class (1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. CST)

People have used codes and ciphers to send secret messages for thousands of years.  Today, cryptographers play a critical role in escape rooms, cybersecurity and many other areas.  In this class, students will explore many types of codes and techniques, including cipher wheels, the Caesar shift, the Vigenère cipher, and keyword ciphers, and apply these concepts through encrypting and decrypting their own secret messages.  We will enrich our understanding of these codes through a brief study of how they were used in the past as well as how they are used today.  Topics will include cracking the enigma machine code in WWII, the Navajo code-talkers, deciphering the human DNA, and block-chain encryption.  The class will culminate in the creation of our own escape room.  If you enjoy solving puzzles and applying your learning, this is the course for you!
