In his work as a Middle School Math Teacher and Math Team Coach, Sam delights in mathematical discovery and problem solving. After getting an undergraduate degree in environmental science, Sam joined the Minnesota Phenology Network, an interdisciplinary team of data scientists, artists, and ecologists working to understand and express climate change’s impact on local communities. While designing and leading workshops aimed at helping communities visualize and ask questions about local climate data, Sam realized a clear connection between mathematics and play. Teaching felt like a natural extension of this work. Sam is still finding ways for students to discover the connection between math, technology, and art.
