Roller coasters are one of the most exciting attractions at amusement parks, with rides getting taller, faster, and more thrilling every year. But the science behind these rides is surprisingly simple—and incredibly fascinating. In this class, we’ll explore the fundamental principles that power these rides, including the interplay between potential and kinetic energy, the forces that keep us in our seats, the effects of acceleration, and why we experience weightlessness during the drops. Students will also get the chance to design, build, and test their own model roller coasters, using engineering techniques developed by the experts who create these iconic rides. It’s an exciting hands-on experience that brings physics to life while designing thrilling, gravity-defying adventures!
