Nuclear Physics: Promising or Problematic?

  • Session

    EYM 2026 Session B

  • Class Category

    STEM

Nuclear energy is incredibly powerful, but what actually fuels that power, and what role should it play in our energy future? In this course, students will explore the fundamentals of nuclear physics, from the development of atomic theory to using E = mc² to understand how nuclear reactions release energy. We’ll examine how reactors work, compare fission and fusion, and evaluate the safety, sustainability, and policy debates surrounding nuclear power. Focusing on Minnesota’s energy landscape, students will analyze real-world challenges and design their own plans for meeting future electricity needs. If possible, we’ll also visit a nuclear training facility to see how experts prepare for modern energy demands. By the end of the session, students will understand both the science behind nuclear power and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the future.
