Environmental Chemistry is a vast and broad topic that includes the chemistry of land, water, and air, as well as the interaction of chemicals with plants and animals (including humans) in the environment. Through hands-on labs and small group investigations, students will explore the social, economic, and environmental consequences of both naturally occurring and anthropogenic chemical reactions. The course emphasizes global environmental challenges such as ozone depletion, global warming, air and water pollution, and hazardous waste management. Topics will include the chemical mechanisms behind these issues, their real-world applications, and strategies for mitigation. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply scientific reasoning in contexts involving chemistry, conduct chemical experiments and evaluate the results, use the scientific method to analyze environmental phenomena involving chemistry and society, and understand how chemistry is used to address real-world challenges.
