Thursdays, 4:30pm – 6:00pm and Saturdays, 1:00pm – 2:30pm
As a famous Minnesotan musician once sang, “Oh the times, they are a-changing!” Through watercolor, collage and drawing, students will process their personal experiences and understandings of the great societal changes happening around them at a local, domestic and global level. We will begin by looking at how other artists have responded to the current global crises through the Black Lives Matter movement, the upcoming elections and the coronavirus pandemic. We will investigate the rich history around other artists’ interpretations of and responses to global issues of their times, including the Great Depression and the WPA, WWI and the Dada movement, Art and the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War and Protest Art. The students will use this historical inspiration to create their own art in response to this strange and historic time. ($50 course fee)
